How to Suppress a Mugshot on Google

How to Suppress a Mugshot on Google beside a woman pointing down to push down mugshots

Not every mugshot can be removed. Some sites will only take it down if your charges were dropped or expunged. Others are run out of countries with no takedown laws at all, using foreign domains and ignoring U.S. mugshot laws and requests. If you’ve hit a wall trying to get your photo taken down, suppression may be your best option.

Suppression means pushing negative content down in Google’s results so that fewer people see it. It doesn’t delete the content from the source, but it can bury the mugshot below newer, more positive results, both in standard search and in Google Images.

Step 1: Where is the mugshot right now

Start by Googling your full name.

Check:

  • Page 1 of the main search results
  • The image pack (the row of photos often shown at the top)
  • Google News, Videos, or Maps, if applicable

If your mugshot shows up in the image pack, you’ll need to treat that as a separate priority. You can suppress the image, but only by adding more image-based content.

Make sure you can't remove it first

Before you try to push your mugshot down in search, confirm that removal isn’t an option. Some sites will delete photos for free if your case was dismissed, expunged, or you were never charged. Others are protected by law or based overseas, which makes legal takedown unlikely.

Here’s how to check:

  1. Google your full name + “mugshot”
    • Example: John Doe mugshot Florida
  2. Check the most common mugshot websites:
    1. Mugshots.com
    2. Arre.st
    3. BustedNewspaper.com
    4. Mugshots.zone
    5. Arrests.org
    6. RecentlyBooked.com
    7. Rain-Street.org (formerly arrestfacts.com)
    8. TheGeorgiaGazette.com
    9. BocaNewsNow.com
  3. Use Incognito Mode to avoid personalized search results that may hide what others see.

If removal isn’t possible, that’s when suppression becomes the best option.

Step 2: Build Positive Content That Google Can Rank

To push your mugshot down, you’ll need to flood the search results with more relevant, trustworthy pages. These can include:

  • Personal websites (use your name in the domain and title tags)
  • Social media profiles (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X)
  • Press releases or articles mentioning your name
  • Business or personal bios on sites like Crunchbase, Medium, About.me, or ProfileWiki
  • Online portfolios or listings (especially for professionals, creatives, or business owners)

These assets don’t have to go viral. They just have to be optimized around your name so Google starts ranking them above the mugshot.

Step 3: Include Strong Image Signals

If your mugshot appears in Google Images, you’ll need to create a new image trail that Google can follow. This means:

  • Uploading clean, professional photos of yourself on multiple platforms
  • Using consistent file names (e.g., yourname-photo.jpg)
  • Adding alt text that includes your full name
  • Embedding your images in content that ranks (websites, blogs, press, etc.)

Google’s image algorithm prioritizes relevance, context, and authority. So the more places your clean images appear, especially on your own sites or well-known platforms, the better your chances of pushing the mugshot down or out of view.

Step 4: Set Up a Reputation Monitoring System

Suppression takes time. It won’t happen overnight, and the mugshot may bounce back into view if your other results lose authority.

Use tools like:

  • Google Alerts (for your name)
  • Brand24, Meltwater or Erase.com dashboards
  • Monthly search result screenshots

Tracking visibility helps you measure what’s working, and whether you need to create more content or update old assets to stay ahead.

Step 5: Don’t Feed the Fire

If the mugshot site is asking for payment and you’re outside the eligibility window for removal (or they’re ignoring mugshot laws entirely), don’t pay. Engaging with these sites can lead to repeat targeting or even re-uploaded content.

Focus on suppression instead. While it takes more time and effort, it also builds long-term protection by shifting what shows up on your first page, and what doesn’t.

If removal is your preferred option, we strongly recommend working with a reputation management or content removal company to remove it rather than exposing your personal and payment details to the mugshot site.
